Artist Statement

I keep returning to materials that are already changing — clay, weathered wood, fallen leaves, surfaces marked by time. I do not always understand that attraction while I am working. Often its meaning becomes clearer only later. Working with these materials has gradually made me more attentive to transformation — to the way things move, change and return in different forms.

Not everything enters the work consciously. An object, a landscape, a gesture, a phrase, or a particular atmosphere may pass almost unnoticed and return much later — as an image, a feeling, or the beginning of a form.

I want the work to hold a quiet but distinct presence — something that does not ask to be noticed, yet rewards attention. I am drawn to the way nature can be constantly present without insisting on itself; much of it is easily passed by unless we choose to look more closely. What someone encounters in the work may be different from what I carried into the making, and that difference matters to me.
