About
I work with clay and porcelain from my studio on Ishigaki Island in southern Japan. I make functional ceramics as well as increasingly sculptural work.
Finding clay
I have always collected things from the earth, flowers, pieces of wood, dead leaves, beach finds. I would make things with them without a clear idea. I only knew that I needed to.
For a while I moved away from working with my hands. In Japan, I found my way back to it, and eventually to clay.
Making
I often do not know beforehand what something will become. I like to do my kind of research, dig into it you may say, about something that caught my eye, or an emotion that evolves around a happening. It’s always connected to the making. I start making, and it develops from there.
