Handle & care

by celeste

Pottery is one of the oldest Japanese crafts and art forms. It acts in symbiosis with food, the art of the tea ceremony and ikebana. Handmade pottery adds character to interiors, more significantly it resembles the color and textures of the current season. It has the power to make us look at nature in a different perspective.

Beauty of imperfection

Japanese ceramics are characterized by their beauty of imperfection. Because of a different expansion rate of the clay and the glaze, some glazes show fine cracks. In Japan this is said to show the ‘face’ or ‘character’ of the ware.

Every piece is carefully made by hand. There may be slight variation in sizes specified and also variation in glaze.
Wash them by hand with a neutral detergent when you can as a regular dishwasher may shorten their lifespan. Avoid placing in extreme hot or cold environments such as an oven or freezer. This can cause thermal shock and result in fragility.

Japanese pottery captures the essence of ‘wabi sabi’
